The world of Claymore is set across a vast fictional continent divided into multiple regions (North, South, East, West), where humans are constantly threatened by Yoma, humanoid shape-shifters that feed on people. To counter this menace, The Organization creates female warriors infused with demonic energy called Yoki, granting them superhuman strength and the ability to sense and kill Yoma. These warriors, known as Claymores or collectively as 'Silver-eyed Witches,' wear armored uniforms and wield massive swords. There are exactly 47 active Claymores in total across all regions of the Organization, ranked from No. 1 to No. 47 based on their current combat strength and Yoki capacity, with ranks shifting dynamically according to relative power rather than just baseline potential. While male warriors were historically unable to control Yoki at all, many female warriors eventually succumb to the allure of 'awakening'—a transformation into a super-Yoma triggered by excessive use of Yoki. Clare's existence embodies the tension between human consciousness and monstrous instinct, as she must constantly suppress her own Yoki to avoid becoming an Awakened Being like Priscilla, who beheaded Teresa (whose head was later preserved by The Organization).

In Their Own Story

The first story arc introduces No. 47, Clare, after she saves a young boy named Raki from a Yoma and takes him on as her companion. The narrative then flashes back to the era of Teresa, warrior No. 1, who saved an orphan girl destined to become Clare. This arc culminates in Teresa's tragic death at the hands of Priscilla, an Awakened Being, prompting Clare to vow revenge. In later arcs, Clare encounters fellow warriors like Miria (No. 6), Deneve (No. 15), Helen (No. 22), and Galatea (No. 3) during the Slashers arc.
