The transformation occurs when a warrior releases their Yoki beyond safe limits or consumes too much Yoma flesh. This triggers a physical change where the body shifts into myriad forms: Hilda became a bird, Agatha a crustacean, Dauf a giant armored humanoid, and Isley a centaur-like figure capable of shaping his arms into weapons. The most powerful are known as "Creatures of the Abyss" (Shin'en no mono). In Organization history, there were three such No. 1 warriors: Lautrec in the West, Alfons in the North, and Mucha in the South. This status quo changed when Isley, the "Silver King," began raising an army to expand his influence into other regions. Some Awakened Beings are created through specific experiments, such as the twins Alicia and Beth, who function as a two-body warrior where one awakens while the other retains human control. Others, like Luciela and Rafaela, attempted a failed experiment with non-identical sisters before merging their Yoki to survive. The Abyss Feeders were later created from 11 warriors sent to hunt these creatures; they have their eyes and mouths sewn shut to track targets by scent alone.

In Their Own Story

Isley, the Creature of the Abyss of the North, gathered a Northern Army after Priscilla defeated him in battle. To conceal her true power, Isley claimed victory himself, promising to take the regressed child-Priscilla south. Meanwhile, Ophelia, known as "Rippling Ophelia," succumbed to trauma from her family's death at the hands of Priscilla. After a battle with Clare in a lake, she saw her reflection and allowed herself to be killed, believing she would reunite with her brother. Agatha hid in Robona until Galatea baited an execution team consisting of Clarice and Miata into a three-way fight. Agatha fought in a mummy-like body before being defeated by survivors of the Northern Campaign. The twins Alicia and Beth were eventually defeated and killed by Priscilla, ending their unique existence as a controlled Awakened Being program that followed the failure of Luciela and Rafaela.

To identify an Awakened Being, look for the specific form they take: bird, crustacean, humanoid, or mammal. Their intelligence varies; Dauf displays low tactics despite his physical power, while Isley shows great respect even to opponents. The Abyss Feeders are unique, having their eyes and mouths sewn shut to remove Yoki sensing, forcing them to rely on scent alone. They return home if six or more are killed. Combat strategies against them require understanding that they possess regenerative abilities similar to but greater than standard Yoma. However, destroying the head is a definitive method of killing them. Priscilla's awakening into a winged, one-horned demonic humanoid allowed her to fight without releasing Yoki, concealing her presence from other warriors. When facing these entities, remember that some, like Ophelia, may believe they are still in control even as they crave entrails.
