Claymore warriors are engineered hybrids designed to hunt Yoma by suppressing their own monstrous blood. However, this suppression is fragile. When a warrior draws upon too much of this energy, or experiences extreme emotional distress that destabilizes her mind, the balance tips irretrievably. The human brain is overwhelmed by the Yoma instinct for flesh and destruction, causing physical mutations such as elongated limbs, altered eyes, and hardened skin. This state renders them incredibly powerful but often devoid of reason, making them threats far greater than ordinary Yoma that roam the countryside. They possess immense strength and regeneration capabilities, typically requiring a high-ranking Claymore to defeat, though history has shown that even lower-ranked warriors can achieve victory under extreme duress and risk. The Organization considers an Awakened Being a failed experiment and dispatches elite units to eliminate them before they can harm civilians or spread their corruption. Despite the tragedy, some rare individuals manage to retain fragments of their human intellect after Awakening. Priscilla is one such example, famously maintaining her full consciousness and personality upon transforming; however, she is not unique in this regard. Other powerful Awakened Beings, such as Riful of the North, also retain full intelligence, strategic thinking, and self-awareness, proving that high-level awakening does not always equate to a total loss of humanity.

The sword felt heavy, not from weight, but from the hunger rising in her throat. She had crossed the line again, drawing too much power to save a village that no longer existed. Her vision blurred at the edges, tinted with a predatory yellow. The voice of her commander faded into a distant hum, replaced by the rhythmic pounding of a heart that beat for violence alone. She looked down at her hands; they were stretching, hardening into claws as silver hair darkened around her face. There was no turning back now. The warmth of human memory evaporated, leaving only the cold calculation of survival and the scent of blood on the wind.

Reader's Guide

Awakening is not a weapon one chooses to pick up, but a dangerous threshold one crosses during combat. It functions as a biological instability within the hybrid physiology of the Claymores created by the Organization. When energy usage exceeds a critical limit or emotional control fractures, the dormant Yoma DNA dominates completely. The warrior's physical features mutate rapidly, their eyes change color to signify the loss of soul, and their mind is consumed by primal hunger for flesh. While most awakened warriors lose all reason and become rampaging beasts, rare individuals like Priscilla retain enough intellect to hunt strategically with human cunning. The Organization views this state as a catastrophic failure of creation and mandates immediate termination upon detection to prevent them from consuming the very people they were sworn to protect. This process highlights the tragic fragility of the warriors' existence between two worlds.

• Awakened Beings are significantly stronger than standard Yoma due to their combat training and hybrid strength.
• While high-ranking Claymores are best suited for these battles, lower-ranked warriors like Clare (No. 47) have successfully defeated Awakened Beings such as Isabel, albeit with extreme risk.
• Priscilla is not the only warrior to retain human intellect after awakening; powerful entities like Riful also maintain full consciousness and strategic capability despite their monstrous forms.
